This beautiful 8-inch plaster statue of St. Lucy comes from a now-closed Catholic convent, where devotional pieces such as this were part of the everyday prayer life of generations of religious sisters.
St. Lucy of Syracuse was a young Christian virgin and martyr who gave her life for Christ during the persecutions of the early Church, around 304 A.D. Her name, Lucia, comes from the Latin word lux, meaning “light.”
She is immediately recognizable in this statue by the dish bearing two eyes, one of the most distinctive symbols in Catholic sacred art. St. Lucy has been invoked for centuries as the patron saint of the blind, eyesight, and those suffering from diseases or ailments of the eyes. She is also traditionally depicted with the palm of martyrdom, seen along her side.
There is something especially meaningful about acquiring an older religious statue that actually comes from a convent rather than a newly manufactured devotional piece. We can only imagine the prayers, Masses, Rosaries, joys, sorrows, and years of religious life that surrounded it before the convent eventually closed.
The statue is made of plaster and retains lovely old-fashioned coloring in soft rose, cream, green and gold tones. As an older devotional piece, it shows age-appropriate wear that adds to its character and history.
