An extraordinary devotional remembrance of Rome and the pontificate of Pope St. John Paul II.
This is certainly not your ordinary rosary.
This beautiful vintage Rome/Vatican pilgrimage rosary immediately caught our attention because every Hail Mary bead has been fashioned into a tiny, three-dimensional silver-tone rose. Rather than conventional Our Father beads, the decades are separated by substantial gold-tone devotional medallions associated with the great basilicas and holy places of Rome.
At the center is a handsome gold-tone medal depicting Pope St. John Paul II, immediately connecting the rosary with one of the most beloved Catholic figures of the modern era.
John Paul II had an especially profound devotion to Our Lady and the Holy Rosary. His papal motto, Totus Tuus—“Totally Yours”—expressed his complete entrustment to Jesus through Mary. In 2002, he issued his beautiful apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae and gave the Church the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary.
This piece is especially fascinating because it appears to combine that papal devotion with the tradition of pilgrimage to Rome. The large gold-tone decade medallions bear images and inscriptions associated with Rome's great basilicas and sacred sites. Turning the medals over reveals additional beautifully raised architectural and religious imagery.
Completing the rosary is a striking gold-tone crucifix
The contrast is simply gorgeous: antiqued silver-tone roses against warm gold-tone Catholic medals and crucifix. It has the unmistakable character of an older devotional piece that has been handled, prayed and carried rather than something newly manufactured yesterday.
A Rosary Filled With Catholic Symbolism
The rose itself has been associated with the Rosary for centuries. Even the word rosarium evokes a “crown” or “garden of roses”—a beautiful image of each Hail Mary offered to Our Lady as a spiritual rose.
Here those roses are literally placed into your hands as you pray.
The Roman basilica imagery recalls the countless Catholic pilgrims who have traveled to the Eternal City to pray at the tombs of the Apostles and visit the great churches at the heart of Catholicism.
And at its center is Pope St. John Paul II (1920–2005), the profoundly Marian pope who repeatedly encouraged the faithful to rediscover the Rosary as a prayer centered upon Christ.
Vintage, most likely dating to the pontificate or era of Pope John Paul II (1978–2005).
A truly unusual piece for the Catholic collector—and an especially meaningful treasure for someone devoted to Our Lady, the Holy Rosary, Pope St. John Paul II, or the sacred churches of Rome.
