Pietà — Mary Holding Our Lord — 5½ Inches — From a Now-Closed Convent

This one made me cry as we were unboxing treasures from a now-closed convent. Before I thought about where to photograph it or what to write, I simply saw a mother holding her Son. ❤️

This image is known as the Pietà, an Italian word meaning pity or compassion. It depicts Our Blessed Mother cradling the body of Jesus after His death on the Cross. Although Scripture does not explicitly describe this particular moment, the image prayerfully brings together Christ’s Passion and Mary’s sorrow.

Here is the mother who once held Him as a newborn, now holding Him after His sacrifice for our salvation. Her tenderness invites us to remain close to Jesus in His suffering—and to remember that love does not end at death.

For anyone who has lost a child, mourned someone dearly loved, or carried a sorrow too deep for words, the Pietà can be especially moving. Mary knows the anguish of a mother’s heart. We can ask her to pray with us in our grief and lead us toward the hope of her Son’s Resurrection.

This 5½-inch devotional statue has a warm ivory-colored finish, flowing drapery, and “PIETA” inscribed on its base. Coming from a convent that has now closed, it is a tender piece to welcome into a home prayer corner.

Condition: Visible chips and finish loss appear on Jesus’s upper arm and along the base, with additional surface marks.
