Our Lady of Consolation with the Christ Child — 6½ Inches — From a Closed Convent

Some treasures carry such a tender message. This beautiful Our Lady of Consolation statue comes from a now closed convent and bears a label from the Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, Ohio.

Mary and the Christ Child wear ornate crowns, cream-colored garments with lovely textured detailing, and soft blue mantles. Mary holds a scepter, while little Jesus raises His hand in blessing and holds a cross-topped orb.

The devotion: Under the title Our Lady of Consolation, we turn to Mary as Consoler of the Afflicted, asking her motherly intercession in times of grief, illness, loneliness, and worry. She draws us closer to her Son, the source of our hope and consolation. It is a particularly comforting devotion for anyone carrying a sorrow that others cannot see.

The Carey devotion has roots in Luxembourg. A replica of the Luxembourg statue arrived in Carey in 1875, and pilgrims have been bringing their needs and prayers of thanksgiving to the shrine ever since.
