What is Good Friday Oil?
Good Friday Oil is a blessed sacramental made from pure olive oil, traditionally blessed on the most solemn day of the Church year—Good Friday, the day we commemorate the Passion and Death of our Lord Jesus Christ.

It is a sign of devotion and a spiritual aid that many Catholics treasure for its symbolic connection to Christ’s suffering, His healing love, and the power of the Cross. Used with faith and reverence, it can be a powerful reminder of God’s mercy and protection in the midst of spiritual battles, illness, or trials.

Why is Good Friday Oil So Rare?
This oil is difficult to find because it is only blessed once a year, and only in places where priests or religious observe this special tradition—which is not widespread. Unlike holy water or other sacramentals that are regularly available, Good Friday Oil is tied to a specific moment in the Church calendar and to a blessing that is often overlooked in modern parish life.

In many churches, the Good Friday liturgy does not include the blessing of oil, making it rare for the faithful to have access to this particular sacramental. It is typically only available from individuals or communities who have preserved this traditional devotion and intentionally prepare the oil in advance.

How to Use Good Friday Oil:

• Anointing for spiritual protection or healing: Trace a small cross on the forehead or over the heart while praying in the Name of Jesus and invoking His Passion.

• Blessing your home: Anoint doorposts or windows while praying for Christ’s peace and protection to dwell in your home.

• During times of spiritual warfare or illness: Use alongside Scripture and prayer, calling on the power of the Cross.

• With your Rosary or Divine Mercy Chaplet: As a physical sign of your trust in Christ’s mercy and healing love.
