The story of the Caravaca Cross dates to 13th-century Spain, in the town of Caravaca. According to a long-held Catholic tradition, a Christian priest named Fr. Ginés Pérez Chirinos was being held captive by the Muslim ruler, King Zayd Abu Zayd. Curious about the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the king requested that the priest celebrate Mass before him.

As the priest began, he realized the altar was missing one essential element—the crucifix. Unable to continue without it, he paused. At that moment, according to tradition, two angels descended from Heaven carrying a double-barred cross, placing it upon the altar so the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass could continue. Witnessing this miracle, the king and many of those present were deeply moved and embraced the Christian faith.

From that day forward, the Cross of Caravaca became a treasured symbol of Christ's victory, divine protection, and the power of the Holy Mass. For centuries it has been carried by the faithful as a reminder of God's providence and has often been associated with prayers for protection, blessing, and steadfast faith.
