Authentic Silver Denaro of Lucca – From the Time of the First Crusade

 Nearly a thousand years ago, this small silver denaro passed through a world of ancient churches, bustling marketplaces, Christian pilgrims, and a Europe deeply shaped by the Catholic faith.

 This genuine medieval silver denaro was struck in Lucca, Italy, during the era of the Holy Roman Empire. Coins such as these passed from hand to hand—carried by merchants and travelers, offered in marketplaces, and used by ordinary men and women living in the heart of medieval Christendom.

 Perhaps most fascinating is the place these little silver coins hold in the history of the First Crusade (1096–1099). Raymond of Aguilers, a priest and eyewitness chronicler who accompanied the Crusaders to the Holy Land, specifically named the denari of Lucca among the currencies they carried, writing Erat haec nostra moneta—“This was our money.” Luccan denari have also been discovered in the lands of the Crusader states, tangible evidence of how widely these coins traveled with the men and commerce of that extraordinary age.

During the Middle Ages it stood along the Via Francigena, the great pilgrimage route traveled by countless Christians making their way toward Rome and the tombs of Saints Peter and Paul.
