A fascinating piece of Dutch colonial history dating to the age of the legendary Dutch East India Company (VOC).

This large copper coin measures approximately 1 inch (25.4 mm) in diameter and bears the famous intertwined VOC monogram of the Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie—the Dutch East India Company, one of the most powerful trading enterprises the world has ever known.

The coin bears the date 1790 and appears to be the larger double duit denomination. These copper coins were produced for circulation within the Dutch East Indies and are tangible survivors of an extraordinary period of maritime exploration, international commerce, and colonial history.

This example is a bit worn from age and circulation, with portions of the original devices still visible. Rather than detracting from its appeal, the wear gives this little artifact tremendous character. One can only imagine the number of hands through which it passed during its long history.

An old collector's holder accompanies the coin and identifies it as "Dutch Colony New Amsterdam 1790." We are preserving that handwritten attribution as part of the item's collecting history.

PLEASE NOTE: Some Dutch East Indies double duits continued to carry the old 1790 date even when struck at a later date. Because this coin has not been professionally authenticated or attributed to a specific striking, we are offering it simply as a 1790-dated VOC double duit rather than guaranteeing that it was actually struck in the year 1790.
