Known as Maddonnenmunzen to differentiate it from the earlier Hungarian “Shield Coins” struck a century earlier, the obverse displays the Hapsburg’s Royal Hungarian coat of arms. This Hungarian Madonna and Child Silver Denar is widely recognized as one of the most revered coins of the Renaissance era. Throughout the 16th century, Hungary was constantly at war with the Ottoman Empire. Despite this constant warring, Hungary was prosperous and struck a large amount of silver coinage during this time. These coins — each struck by hand so no two are exactly alike — were also seen as a sign of piety and an act of defiance against the Ottoman Turks. It’s an important piece of European and Christian history!
