Excerpts from Padre Pio: The True Story by C. Bernard Ruffin

... "I knew from experience," Padre Alessio told me in September 1978, "that when Padre Pio said to the sick person, 'I'll pray for you' or Let's pray to God,' that they seemed always to be healed. On the other hand, if he said, 'Lets' resign ourselves to the will of God,' or said nothing at all, the grace of healing was not to be."

... Very often, when Padre Pio could not obtain the grace of a physical healing, he was granted permission by God to take upon himself the patients' physical sufferings. Padre Alessio remembers several instances in which people, in the last stages of cancer, asked Padre Pio to pray for their healing. Pio told them or sent word that it was not God's will that they be delivered from their sickness but that he would take their sufferings upon himself. In almost all of these circumstances, Padre Alessio recalled during our interview in 1978, the sick person never suffered any more pain, even though the illness persisted and ultimately proved fatal.

... Padre Pio, of course, founded a hospital "for the relief of suffering" and often prayed for and obtained material - even financial -blessings.

... "God wants us to help ourselves in seeking healing, and we have the duty to submit.... to medicines and other treatment." That is,even though it may be God's will, one is to seek relief from illness or infirmity first by the usual means.

... Stressing the value of redemptive suffering, Pio often told those whose prayers he knew could never be granted, "Let us resign ourselves to the will of God." He urged the sufferer to offer his pain and anguish to God to be joined to that of Jesus for the redemption of souls. Accordingly, he sometimes looked with favor when certain people declined a gift of healing that was available so that they might offer their suffering as a sacrifice to God.

(1967 besides his ever-growing physical diability and periods of the dark night of the soul, Padre Pio was offering daily Mass and hearing approximately 50 confessions each day) "... Although his physical powers were waning, many of Pdre Pio's colleagues felt that his spiritual life has intensified. One day Padre Constantino entered his room and was struck by what he saw, "His countenance was shining with a rosy flame of light such as I had never seen before and shall, I think, never see again. It was for but an instant, but I shall never forget it. This phenomenon was observed in Moses when he came down fromm Sinai with the two tables of the Law in his hands. It is written that "the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God" (Exodus 34:29).

Frequently during the night, Padre Alessio heard Padre Pio, sitting in his favorite armchair, talking to unseen guests, apparently in bilocation. Padre Pelligrino, who at times also watched the old man at night, said to him one day, "Padre, you can't deny that now and then you go off to Paris, or London, or Berlin, or somewhere else, and at the same time remain comfortably in San Giovanni Rotondo by bilocation..."

"Yes," Pio answered, "whether it's true or not that I am found in various places by bilocation, trilocation, or whatever, you may ask God and not me. All I can tell you is that I always try to remain attached to the thread of His will. For this reason, I am always where I am."

Remember it is your faith, combined with Almighty God's power and Will, in the Holy Name of JESUS that heal you through this holy oil. It is good to remember that the holy oil is just a vehicle that God uses to heal us. We are all instruments of God, only God is the Divine Physician and healer.

As noted by one priest, "Some are healed instantly, some progressively, some spiritually, some physically, and some mentally. Some are healed in all three areas. You may be healed of something other than what you ask for. Whatever Almighty God's Will is for you."
