RARE: Medieval Madonna and Child SILVER Hungarian Coin

As our kids like to say "man, that coin is old!".

This is a pure silver coin from Hungary that was minted between the 1400-1600's, during the early European Renaissance. It is was hand made by Magyar craftsmen.

This coin commemorates the birth of Christ. One side shows the Royal Coat of Arms while the other features the image of the Madonna holding baby Jesus. Only a small quantity of these rare and wonderful coins survived the ages outside of private collections. It is one of the most revered coins from the period.

Coins are not only historically valuable, they are also an excellent investment opportunity during these tumultuos times in our economy. Rare coins continue to be an excellent investment opportunity and are becoming harder and harder to come by!

These particular Madonna and Child Coins are well struck and near uncirculated. Dates will vary, but will fall in the 1400 -1600 period. All are in AU condition (which means "About Uncirculated", which is an excellent grade of coin!) It is truly RARE to find this old of a coin in this good of condition!

The Widow's Mite

This coin is not a replica, but an actual bronze coin, certified genuine, minted in the Holy Land over 2000 years ago during the reign of King Alexander Jannaeus in the century preceding the birth of Jesus (103-76 BC). It is an actual "widow mite" that circulated in the Holy Land during Jesus' life.

What makes these coins of great historical and religious importance is that twice in the Bible (Mark 12:41 & Luke 21:1). Jesus tells the story of the poor widow who gave all that she had which was just two mites. The coin enclosed is identical to the type of coins she would have had. These coins have been known to collectors for hundreds of years as "Widow's Mites."

These coins are an actual part of the historical record, an ancient artifact that was handled and used in market stalls by villagers, desert traders, holy men, and Roman soldiers alike in every day transactions.

Although it is common to view in museums, it is a rare opportunity to actually hold an object of this age and importance in your hands. These coins typically circulated for very long periods and most specimens became worn smooth. It is because of the discovery of an ancient hoard that a limited number of coins of this level of preservation are available.

The picture on the right is of an actual hoard. You will receive one of these along with an explanation sheet and certificate of authenticity.

A Brief History Of The Lincoln Wheat Ear Penny: In 1909, a new one cent coin design was commissioned by the United States Mint. The new copper coin design was the new Lincoln Cent, intended as a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the birth of our 16th President. With Lincoln's profile on the front and the circular wheat stalks on the back, what is now known and the "wheat penny" was born.

Designed by Victor David Brenner, a close associate of Theodore Roosevelt, the artwork was brilliant and the public frenzy for the new coin was tremendous. .

During World War II, copper was a vital war material, so the Treasury was forced to find a replacement metal. Steel cents with a zinc coating were minted in 1943. While unique, the coins soon suffered from rust and worn zinc plating. The next year, copper cents were once again produced, but they were created by using recycled gun shell casings.

In 1955, the San Francisco mint was closed as a cost savings measure by President Eisenhower. The 1955-S cent became a much desired collectors item when it left circulation, especially in the eastern United States, where western mints were scarce.

In 1959, on its 50th Anniversary, the Lincoln Cent design was again changed. The reverse of the coin was changed from the "wheat" design, to show the Lincoln Memorial. Hence, the "Memorial Penny" was born.

Collectors today can thank the early hoarders who stored the popular wheat pennies and had the presence to retain some of the cents for future generation. My Grandmother left behind a wonderful collection for her grandchildren.

I urge folks to become "collectors" so that we may preserve the past by collecting for the future generations!
